There are thousands of peer-reviewed scientific studies exploring the safety of Transcranial electrical stimulation. In fact, it's been approved for use in depression and for treating pain. It is very safe and generally well tolerated. There are no severe side effects from stimulation. Though some people do experience mild adverse effects, like skin tingling or burning sensation and some people experience mild headaches during or shortly after stimulation, these don’t last long subside shortly after stimulation stops. If you’d like to learn more about the side effects of tES, please contact us here (link) and we will send you some interesting journal articles that delve deeper into the safety of stimulation.
We use a device that shines light into your head from LED’s placed on your forehead. Kind of like when you put a flashlight behind your hand and it glows red. Except we measure how much light we shine into the brain, and how much light gets reflected out. This tells us how much oxygenated and deoxygenated blood is in that region of the brain. From this information, we can infer brain activity. This is because brain cells called neurons require oxygenated blood (and all the nutrients that comes with it) in order to support its activity. So when blood oxygenation in a brain region increases, we can infer that the area's metabolic activity has increased, and so has brain activity.
